Unseen Nigeria: appreciating women of repute in Nigeria
ENERGY UNPARALLELED by the Unseen Nigeria Project | Telling the Story Of the Nigerian Women Behind the Scenes | You Nominate, We Find Them,
The World Celebrates Them
Over the last 100 years, Nigerian women have contributed immeasurably to the nation's development. While some of them, especially those in the formal sector, have been increasingly visible, others in the informal sector have largely remained unsung heroines in the background. Many of these women have unique stories of their journey to survival and success and these are the stories the Unseen Nigeria project team wants to curate and celebrate. From market women to fisher women and farmers, women of the underground economy have contributed to the day-to-day socio-economic development of Nigeria and have done so under less than stellar circumstances.
ENERGY UNPARALLELED seeks to project the unseen Nigerian woman with uncompromisable values who is driving for development, pushing for change, making a difference, breaking and setting records, driving community, leading exemplary lives, raising a voice, setting standards, empowering young minds, maintaining unhampered integrity, celebrating courage, honesty, integrity, accountability, persistence, leadership, resilience, hope and the never- die spirit.
If you know a woman in the informal sector who, through her life, work and spirit, is making a difference in their own way, click here www.unseennigeria.com to nominate her as one of the 100 women to be celebrated in this project.

Leprosy hits Nigeria
The Leprosy Mission of Nigeria (TLMN), on Monday disclosed that over 3,500 Nigerians are affected with leprosy annually with about 25 percent having some degree of disability.
Operations Manager in charge of the Mission, Mr. Pius Ogbu disclosed this to newsmen at a briefing to mark the Mission's Policy Makers Workshop in Minna.
According to him: "We have discovered that the number of persons affected annually by the disease in Nigeria is over 3,500 with about 25 percent of patients having some degree of disability.
"The stigma and discrimination against these people in the country are very high due to the myth and suspicion associated with the disease.
"Every new case of persons affected by the disease and discovered was diagnosed for possible treatment with the Mission's support and care especially as the disease is mostly common in places of poverty, dirty water, poor nutrition and low standard of living."
He added that the Mission has earmarked the sum of N50 million for the execution of its projects in Niger State for the next three years.
"The Mission will spend N11 million out of the said amount this year on some of its activities which had already commenced in the state, while N20 million will be expended in 2014, with the remaining N19 million set aside for use in 2015," he said.
The Operations Manager informed our correspondent that the project was aimed at addressing the discrimination, stigma, exclusion and human rights abuses due to leprosy, as well as to improve the quality of lives of persons affected by the disease in four local government areas in Niger State, which include Chanchaga, Shiroro Munya and Paikoro.
Furthermore, Ogbu said that the Policy Makers Workshop would comprise opinion leaders, Local Government Authorities, Civil Society Group, Politicians and Community leaders.

Man blows up house after watching TV show
Police say a suicidal pennyslyvania man blew up his house after watching a TV show about the Hindenburg, the airship that exploded in 1937.
Forty-seven-year-old Shawn Landa is still recovering from his injuries in the Oct. 12 blast that destroyed his Moon Township home, about 10 miles west of Pittsburgh.
Police on Thursday charged him with arson and related crimes.
They say in court papers that Landa confessed to breaking a natural gas line in his home, expecting that something would ignite it while he took a nap. Police say the blast didn't happen, Landa woke up and he ignited the gas when he lit a cigarette.
He apparently learnt a little about natural gas from the movie.
Police say Landa was distraught over being unemployed and not having custody of his children. He told police of other recent suicide attempts.

Introducing Google's Nexus 5 smart phone
Technology is really moving at the speed of light, the smartphone you have today can become a walkie talkie next week or even tomorrow.
The technology scene is a very competitive one, with companies swallowing up each other, and underdogs fighting for the top spot.
Blackberry came and swept Nokia, Android phones have now taken over the scene and sent blackberry packing...
Google isn't left out of this war, as they have finally pulled the curtain off their new device Nexus 5...
The Nexus 5 would be the first device to feature the latest android OS codenamed Kitkat (android 4.4).
The Android 4.4 OS has faster multitasking and full voice control, according to Google, and a smarter caller ID system so that if the number dialing in isn't on your contacts list then Android will take a guess at who it is using businesses listed on Google Maps.
KitKat devices can now send documents to printers directly using Google Cloud Print or HP's ePrint system, and Quickoffice has been redesigned to make finding files easier and editing documents and spreadsheets more simple.
Google has stuck with LG as its hardware maker for the Nexus 5, rather than switching to Motorola as some rumors had suggested. Nexus 5 comes with a five-inch 1920-by-1080-pixel display (that's 445 pixel per inch) and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor running at 2.3GHz with 2GB of RAM, (my current Hp compaq laptop runs @ 2.1Ghz, lol), thIs phone is a computer, I just might sell my laptop to buy this phone...
LTE and dual-aerial Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac) is built in and the handset has two cameras – a bog-standard 1.3Mp front facer for videoconferencing and an 8Mp rear camera. For auteurs, there's also a new HDR+ mode that takes multiple shots quickly and combines them into a single photo that takes the best features from each image.
The new Nexus – one of the most gossiped-about smartphones in a while – is the slimmest one yet at 69.17 x 137.84 x 8.59mm and weighs in at 130g. Google claims the 2,300mAh battery is good for 17 hours of talk time, 300 hours of standby, 8.5hours with of WiFi use!!! This sort of battery life makes a blackberry look like a mere toy, it also has wireless charging and NCF
The Nexus 5 will cost $349 for the 16GB version and $399 for 32GB of storage, but there's no slot to fit any removable media, presumably since we're all supposed to be cloudy these days. Google has also eschewed Apple and Motorola Mobility's fruity color schemes – the Nexus 5 is available in black and white only.

The secret killer called stress
Stress is the feeling of being under too much
mental or emotional pressure.
Pressure turns into stress when you feel unable to
cope.
People have different ways of reacting to stress, so a situation that feels stressful to one person may be motivating to someone else.
Many of life's demands can cause stress,
particularly work, relationships and money
problems, when you feel stressed, it can get in the way of sorting out these demands, or can even affect everything you do.
Stress can affect how you feel, think, behave and
how your body works. In fact, common signs of
stress include sleeping problems, sweating, loss of
appetite and difficulty concentrating.
You may feel anxious, irritable or low in self esteem, and you may have racing thoughts,
worry constantly or go over things in your head.
You may notice that you lose your temper more easily, drink more or act unreasonably.
You may also experience headaches, muscle
tension or pain, or dizziness.
Stress causes a surge of hormones in your body.
These stress hormones are released to enable you
to deal with pressures or threats – the so-called
"fight or flight" response.
Once the pressure or threat has passed, your
stress hormone levels will usually return to
normal.
However, if you're constantly under stress, these hormones will remain in your body,
leading to the symptoms of stress.

ASUU Strike: FG hasn't released any part of the 100 billion naira intervention fund
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, insists that the Federal government hasn't released any money out of the 100 billion naira intervention.
According to ASUU, none of the 59 government-owned varsities had received the said sum as reported in some publications.
Chairman of the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi branch of ASUU, Dr. Celestine Aguoru, stated this yesterday after leading members of the branch on a peaceful march.
The members numbering about 200 converged on the Kenville Parks and Gardens, High Level in Makurdi, the Benue State capital as early as 8.am, chanting solidarity songs.
However, few minutes after they kicked off the march, armed policemen and men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) arrived the scene, blocking them with their vehicles.
The striking lecturers insisted that the action will continue until their demands are met, recalling that they gave government enough time to implement the 2009 agreement.
Aguoru in his address said "As we are talking today, government has not released one kobo out of the N100 billion they claimed they have given the universities; this goes to show the level of insincerity on their part.
"The N100 billion they are talking about is just by word of mouth. All that ASUU is asking is for government to implement the 2009 agreement and stop playing politics with the education of our students."
"The truth is that government is paying lip service to the development of education in this country and has therefore resorted to playing politics with the education sector and the future of our children.
He said it is unfortunate that majority of the nation's present leaders attended schools on scholarships, but have refused to extend such benefit to today's youth.
"Today we are faced with a situation where the amount Nigerians spend yearly to educate their children in Ghana is far more than the yearly budgetary allocation to the education sector", he continued.
"Our leaders are not being fair to our country. Government should as a matter of priority implement its agreements with ASUU. Nigerians are tired of this deceit; they should remember that if they continue to negate their responsibilities to the people, one day they will certainly give account to God," the leader added.
From all indications, it appears that this strike won't be called off this year.
While students in private schools are preparing for NYSC, those in Federal schools are made to lay waste at home.
The Nigerian government doesn't have the interest of the people at heart, if I is to survive here, you have to be ready to do it on your own...
