ASUU Strike: UNILAG Students still appear to be having fun

Academic activities may have ceased following the ongoing strike caused by the ever-growing rift between the academic unions and the FG, yet to many students, life on campus has never been any better. It appears most students do not want the almost 11 weeks old strike called off as yet.

Few days ago, I heard a student say that, "If ASUU will not settle their scores with the federal government, it is their business, to us life goes on.”  Regrettably, that has been the case for many students. While only a few want the strike called off, others want it sustained. They seem to have found a new lifestyle, one that affords them the freedom to do what they want to do, when they want to do it.

One would have expected that, by now, the hostels would have been vacated and put under lock and key. But that has not happened, thanks to school management who didn’t put it into consideration. I mean, what would have been the fate of the old and young women, casually identified as “any-wash”, “any-work”, “any-anything-you-want-help-with”, and who make a living from rendering local and menial services to students in the hostels, especially the female hostels. Where would they have pitched their tents? Where would the next meal ticket have come from? That would have been a sad tale to tell for folks who have known only this type of trade for the past decades.
Although the hostel were not vacated by the students, it still affected a few number of people such as the security personnel who do not get as much tips as they used to, and the food vendors, some of whom have been forced to suspend business activities as a result of the little or no patronage they experience from the few students, since most of the them have now resorted to doing the cooking themselves, and have even made “cassava flakes” their favorite lunch choice.

For someone visiting during daytime, the school may appear quite boring judging from the number of students seen around, the shuttle buses parked and lined up without passengers, the classrooms and faculty buildings void of students who normally loiter around, as well as the virtually empty and inactive shopping complexes. But for those students who know “as e dey go for Unilag”, there could be no better time than the on-going indefinite vacation occasioned by the feud between the FG and ASUU.
Students are indoors busy with a number of stuff that has no academic orientation. Who has time for book sef? Even some of the final year students who are supposed to be working on their projects have abandoned it. Some stay indoors playing games, others watching movies, sleeping and waking up to continue the movie series. The common room has become a permanent viewing center for watching movies ranging from Africa Magic while others go on surfing the internet, downloading television series, facebooking… and taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi connection available.
Most times you would even hear these students having some kind of altercation with one another keeping the common room and hostel noisy and lively. Many a student would come around the hostel on weekdays to have a feel of school and they sure did. Power for sure has always been very good.

If you take a stroll through New hall complex¸ one of the busiest places in the University of Lagos, at night, you’d understand why some of these students want these strike sustained. Despite the ongoing strike, this complex still maintains its rave. From the turnout of the big and flashy cars waiting to get some hot and sassy girls to the crowded joints- suya, chicken and chips joints, although the number may have receded. Many have cultivated the habit of going to nightclubs regularly.
At Access bank frontage, pairing has not stopped, it has only become more romantic as there are not many eyes around to behold Romeo and Juliet in the niche they carve out for themselves.
This period, only very few students meet at the chapel; Mosque too is fine in case you want to know, just a few days ago there was a program attended by many schools from other parts of the country especially the northern states.
While many student have been thrown into a state of languor, others still gear-up to “jack” but this too “na low-key things jare”.
If you aren’t in school this period you may never have such opportunity again…

Venturi VBB-3: World's most powerful electric car Car of the week!

Those that know me well, know that I have a strong love for cars, so me blogging about 'em wont come as a surprise, even though the page views for this article is expected to be very low... people are not as crazy about cars as I am.
The car of the week goes to the Venturi VBB-3, third generation of electric vehicles, they are called electric vehicles because they don't burn fossil fuels, but instead derive their power from batteries, we also have hybrid vehicles that derive their energy from fossil fuels and batteries, this cars switch from fuel mode to battery mode easily.

The Venturi VBB-3 is a purely electric car, its not just an ordinary electric car, but the world's most powerful electric vehicle, the VBB-3 is not like any car you v seen before, its sleek design and length makes it look like a missile! its 11.6m carbon-fibre body is propelled by 3000HP , that is the combined power of 15 Mercedes Benz 190E,  and 6 2013 Chevrolet Camaro! now that's alot of power!!!
It weighs a whooping 3.2 tonne, that's about 3 mini-vans, and has a drag coefficient of 0.13--- making it very fast and sleek when moving through air.

The Venturi VBB-3 is powered by 2000 cells of  lithium ion phosphate batteries, this car was set to be tested in the bonnesville flats in Uttah, earlier this September, but bad weather prevented this, it was now moved to Wendover Airfield for a series of tests. The royal Prince Albert II of Monaco and Princess Charlene were present for this test.
This high performance vehicle came to existence as a result of the combined effort of the Venturi manufacturing company and the Ohio State University, the Venturi VBB-3 is set to break the record of the world's fastest electric vehicle later this year, theoretically, it can reach a speed of 600km/hr.

ASUU Strike: Yabatech and LASU Students protest in front of UNILAG

ASUU Strike has almost become an annual event in Nigerian Federal and State Universities, this is as a result of the inability of the Federal government to implement its end of the bargain made between the government and the University Staff Union in 2009.

Ever since 2009, Universities have gone on strike nearly every year, ASUU strike is now an annual compulsory holiday for federal universities students while their mates in private school are not affected, this annual event usually lasts about 100 days, however, this edition of ASUU strike might last longer than anticipated, this is because on Monday 23rd September, the ASUU Chairman shocked the NUC by insisting that the strike continues till all their demands are met.

Meanwhile university students were really hoping that this week would be the last week of the strike. Students around the various universities of Nigeria are really tired of this strike, most especially the final year students.

Just this afternoon, students from Yabatech and LASU (Lagos State University) went on a protest in front of the University of Lagos, showing their distress on the entire strike action, and urging UNILAG students to join them in the protest, however they were stopped by the UNILAG Security officials from entering into the university compound.
This strike action isn't helping the already weak educational sector in Nigeria, it seems the federal government wants to weaken the federal and state schools so that students would rather go to private schools owned by Government officials, its just a thought of mine, but its not impossible, I feel a Law should be passed that compels all children of all government officials to attend federal schools, because its obvious their children are not affected by this ASUU strike since most of their kids either school abroad or in private universities, am really sure that if all the governors, senators, local govt chairmen are compelled to send their children to federal schools, there would be a great improvement in the standard of education in the country.

Biography of a rap prodigy-- J'Dizzy

J'Dizzy was born in 1994 and was given the names Joshua Richard Dike, though 19 years old, this rapper has spent 14years of his life in showbiz.
At the age of five years, his father, a model and actor introduced J'Dizzy to the world of 'make-believe', when he released his 5yrs old son to play the role of baby stepehen in the flick 'Good old friends'.
Though young and innocent, his good looks and camera-friendly face earned him a place as Dami in Tajudeen Adepetu's sell out family drama series 'One love'.

It became clear that J'Dizzy was a natural star as he was born with the theater in his blood, but no one, not even J'Dizzy believed that he had a hidden musical talent as a rapper, his latent skill as a rapper came as a shock to him.The Canadian born rapper Drake and American rapper Lil Wayne played a huge role in helping to nurture his rap skills.

In his words 'I had never rapped until I listened to Drake and Lil Wayne, I was moved by the intelligence in their lyrics and at that point in my life, I made a prayer to God to bless me with the talent needed to be a successful rapper, so I can reach out to my peers with the Word of God in a fun and trendy way, months afterwards, I found myself writing and rapping away.'

In October 2012, he joined a group named M.O.G (More of God), he later left the group in February 2013 to go solo. On the 16th of May 2013, he released his first single which he titled 'Your love'. This track had 97.6 percent likes on iroking.com, just a pointer of how talented this young rapper is.

J'Dizzy is currently working on another single, he is yet to come up with a title, but whenever he drops it, you can be sure that its going to be smoking hot.

A Nigerian constructs Nigeria's first amphibious car

Nigeria's first amphibious car
It might look like something out of a Sci-Fi movie, or a space shuttle rocket, It is neither of this, it however is Nigeria's first amphibious car.
An amphibious car is a car designed to move on land and on water, amphibious vehicles are not new, amphibious vehicles such as the Hovercrafts have been around for quite a while, but when it comes to modern day amphibious vehicles, the car manufacturer Rinspeed is a real force to reckon with.

Rinspeed Splash amphibious car

The Rinspeed Splash car is an amphibious car that transforms from a land car to a boat in less than a minute with just the movement of a gear. As odd as it looks, its real.

This wont be the first time that a Nigerian creates a car, however, this is the first time an amphibious vehicle would be created, this vehicle is not just amphibious, it is also expected to fly!
I remember reading about the first Nigerian car, the Z-600 designed by a Nigerian automobile engineer Dr Izuogo, the car was meant to be mass produced and was going to be the cheapest car ever at a price of $2,000 (#320,000). It would have been a proudly Nigerian car, a car build by a Nigerian for Nigerians...

What then happened to this car ? The dream of a mass produced Nigerian car disappeared into thin air, Dr Izuogu could not get the necessary funding for this car, and had to go to South Africa in 2005 where the government was more supportive of his dream.
Everything was going on well for the Z600 not until the 19th of March 2006, when armed men broke into Dr Izuogo's factory and stole all the moulds for the car parts and the design handbook, this singular act killed the dream of the Nigerian car, now all that is left is the singular prototype for the Z600

First Nigerian made car Z600

The Z600 might not be the most beautiful car you have ever since, but it was proudly Nigerian, and yet it failed to receive the proper support from the government.

Rinspeed Splash amphibious car
Till now, no one knows the fate of the Z600.
Its often said that history repeats itself,
Yet another Nigerian engineer has designed a car that would work on road, sea and also defy gravity, he is also in dire need of funding, the engineer Mr Kehinde Durojaiye Obasanjo claims that the car has achieved two out of its three objectives, all that is left for the car to achieve is flight.
Here is another Nigerian, that has a dream, but lacks the financial power to fulfill his dream, would we sit back and allow this dream die just like the Z600 ? I hope we dont.

Photographs of the amphibious jet was taken by my sister, Olaitan Alamu

Wayne Rooney scores 200th goal for Man U, ranks fourth on Man U topmost scorers of all time

Wayne Rooney, born Oct 24 1985, in Liverpool, started his football career with Everton football club in 2002, and later went on to play for Manchester United in 2006.
This transfer to Man-U proved to be the best thing that happened to this player.

Wayne Rooney scored two goals on Tuesday against Leverkusen, making a total of 200 goals scored by the player in just 406 appearances for Manchester United, averagely nearly a goal a game for the club.

In recent times, there have been lots of uncertainty as to Wayne Rooney's loyalty to the club, especially under Manchester United's former manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, but considering his recent achievement, its obvious where his loyalty lies.

This 200 goals achievement gotten by the temperamental yet prolific player might actually place him as the topmost goal scorer for the club of all time. He currently places fourth behind Bobby Charlton who scored 249 goals for the club, Dennis Law (237 goals), and Jack Rowley (211 goals).

David Moyes Manchester United's Manager is positive that Wayne Rooney might actually beat Bobby Charlton's record, considering the fact that he's still very young.

Man robbed of GTA V and stabbed

The most anticipated game of the year-- GTA V Grand Theft Auto was released officially yesterday 17th Sept, ita release was met with a lot of excitement from GTA fans all around the world-- long queues and even stampedes.
As if all that wasn't enough, a 23 year old briton from Northern London was stabbed and robbed of his own copy of the GTA V game!
There's no doubt about how realistic the game would be, all former versions of the game have been very engaging, especially GTA San Andreas. It took Rockstar game five years and $270 million dollars to create this blockbuster game, this budget beats a whole lot of Hollywood movies and of course Nollywood movies
The victim of the attack is in a stable condition right now, however his assailants are still at large.
Its weird how far people can go all cause of a game.

Nigerians banned from applying for american visa lottery

The american visa lottery has helped many Africans, most notably Nigerians to get the much coveted American Visa, the application for 2015 Visa lottery was expected to commence on the 1st of October 2013, however this would no longer be happening because Nigeria and 17 other countries have been banned from applying for the american visa lottery.

The US defended their stance by saying that the reason for Nigeria's exclusion from the American visa lottery application is because in the last five years 50,000 Nigerians have benefited from the lottery scheme.

Nigeria however happens to be the only African country banned from the scheme along with Bangladesh, China, Canada, Brazil, Columbia, Equador, El salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Pakistan, Peru, Phillipines, South korea, Dominican republic, UK and Vietnam.

Nigerians can be found in nearly every country of the world seeking for greener pastures, have you ever stopped to think about it ?
Why do millions of Nigerians dream of leaving the country ? Some even go to the extent of hiding in an airplanes tire compartment just because they want to leave this country.
One thing I know for sure is, If Nigeria were better, no one would want to leave, ask the Citizens of the UAE....

Nigerian musician 9ice dumps music to study law

This wont be the first time a musician goes back to school, American hip-pop sensation Kanye West went back to school to satisfy himself and please his mother.
9ice, the gifted artist, known for his unique style of singing in yoruba language, and for his well known rise from the slums of bariga in Lagos state to stardom,
He was well known for the hit songs Gongo aso, street credibility, gbamu gbamu and a host of other tracks has decided to ditch music, at least for the time being to get a law degree.
9ice left Lagos State University where he was studying Law because he couldn't afford to pay the fees, and decided to face his musical career squarely.
However, this determined artist has decided to further his education and go after his passion--- Law, He is currently studying Public Safety and Common Law in Capella University.
This development would really come as a shock to people especially in a time when the thirst for education is waning worldwide and in Nigeria, especially among guys.
Nice one, Mr 9ice, it just goes to show that education is important....

''Education is not an assurance of success but a platform to make success easily atteannble''

World's hairest teenager

If you think you are hairy, I doubt you are as hairy as this young lady, yep! you heard me, the hairiest teenager is female, I know it sounds odd, but its true, guys are usually more hairy than women, hair growth and distribution on the skin is dictated by the presence of the hormone testosterone, that's why, most girls have smooth skins with hairless faces and guys are generally hairy.
Supatra Sasuphan from Thailand is an exception to the general rule, she's not just an exception, she is the best teenager at being hairy...

From the smile on her face, its apparent that she's happy being the world's hairiest teenager.

Top ten James Bonds cars of all time

James Bond, the MI6 character created by Ian Fleming is known for different things, the character is made to portray a man of great physical fitness, mental alertness, charm, poise and cold logic, there's hardly any James Bond character that isn't a charmer, unless it's Daniel Craig- the recent James Bond character, who seems to be more of a macho man than a gentleman...
No matter the style of the character, there's something that remains central to the James Bond movies--- their taste in exotic high performance cars.
Starting from the bottom, and going all the way to the top, presented below are the top ten James Bond cars.

Sunbean Alpine (10)

The Sunbean Alpine was James bond's first car, the car was featured in the Bond 1962 movie Dr No, considering its lack of gadgets, its position at the bottom of the ladder is understandable...

Lotus espirit turbo (9)

The lotus espirit is a car produced by the Lotus company in the United kingdom, it was first released as a concept car in 1972.
James bond drove the car in for your eyes only, while in the north of Italy, as beautiful as it looks, it holds the nineth position.

Aston martin DBS (8)

The Aston martin brand has been known as James bond car, its the brand that comes to mind each time you think of James bond, The aston martin DBS was featured in the James bond movie On her majesty's secret service, where George Lazenby played James Bond.

Citreon 2CV (7)

I really dont know why this car was voted number 7 ahead of the lotus espirit, but for what its worth, the citreon 2CV did a great job of helping James Bond dodge his enemies in the 1981 movie For your eyes only.

Toyota 2000GT (6)

Sean Connery drove this Japanese sports car in You only live twice, only 300 models of this car were produced, and only two of them had their roofs removed, specially for the movie because Sean Connery couldn't fit into the small car.

Aston martin V8 Vantage (5)

Aston martin featured her beauty V8 vantage in the 1987 James bond movie The living daylights, this car featured alot of gadgets-- lasers, missiles, guns etc that made the movie and the car truly classic.

Aston martin DBS V12 (4)

This beauty featured in Daniel Craigs Casino royale and Quantum of Solace.

Ford mustang Mach 1 (3)

The american muscle car made its most significant appearance in James bonds' 1971 Diamonds are forever, James bond evaded the cops in Las Vegas with the mach 1, the ford mustang had made a earlier appearance in Goldfinger.
The mustang is no newcomer when it comes to movies, however it was this movie that brought the car into limelight.

Lotus espirit (2)

Believe it or not, this car actually doubles as a submarine---- in real life and also in the movie  James bond movie thunderball, this beauty was auctioned off on the 11th of Sept 2013 at a staggering £550,000.... Small price to pay for such an iconic car....

Aston martin DB5 (1)

This is one of my favourite James bond cars, the aston martin DB5, the 1964 James bond movie-- Goldfinger made the aston martin brand what it is today, the DB5 was showcased in the 1964 New york world fair and was announced as the world's famous car, two DB5s were produced for the movie-- one with the weapons and the other without the weapons, one of the cars was stolen and is still at large to this day.
The DB5 appeared in thunderball, Casino royale, and even in the 23rd James bond movie skyfall, where it met its demise in Scotland Skyfall when the enemies came looking for M and Daniel Craig at his hide-out.
This car sold for £2,600,000 and is undoubtedly the greatest bond car of all time.....

Former Ondo state Governor Segun Agagu is dead

Dr Olusegun Agagu, the immediate past  governor of Ondo State is dead.
He was reported to have slumped on friday, 13th of September at 8pm while at a meeting with Ondo state indigenes in Ikoyi, he was later rushed to a private hospital in Yaba, and later to Military hospital Ikoyi, where he was confirmed dead.
The ex governor returned from the United States of America on thursday after spending 3 weeks abroad, the actual cause of death is still unknown.

Olusegun Kukomo Agagu was born on the 16th of February 1948, he began his primary education at St Luke's primary school Okitipupa in 1954, he later concluded his primary education at Ebenezer African Primary School, Ibadan in 1960.
He gained admission at the age of 20 to study Botany, which he later changed to Geology, he was an exceptional student and graduated in the Second class upper division at the age of 23. His thirst for knowledge drove him to pursue a master's degree in the University of Texas.

Between 1973 and 1974, he obtained his Masters degree from the University of Texas, one would assume that he would stop there, however on returning to Nigeria, he got his doctorate degree in Petroleum Geology from the Univeristy of Ibadan at the age of 30.

Dr Agagu was one time Minister of Aviation in 1999, under President Olusegun Obasanjo's Administration, he later went on to be the Governor of Ondo State from the 29th of May 2003 to February 2009.
There is no doubt, Ondo state has really lost a legend, may his soul rest in peace.

ASUU vs FG : The cry of a university student

I HOPE THAT DAY IS NEAR
(... The cry of a university student)

Two elephants wrestle
The grasses beneath suffer
It ends eventually.
For the elephants,
It's business as usual.
But can the same be said
 for the grass?

If you only know
The horror that strike is
You would curse it
They tell us it is for our good
and yet nothing to compensate our wasted months,
 and sometimes years.

Two months are gone
And still counting on.
Should we blame the leaders
 For having no shame?
Or the people
who elected them again and again?

Our law has failed us
It has lost its power to enforce
When deceit created a hedge
And lies became a fence
Who shall we run to for help?

I look forward to that day
And I hope that day is near
When we'd happily entrust our lives,
Our hopes, our dreams, our future
In the hands of our leaders
In the hands of the law
...I hope that day is near.

53 gold Iphones ordered by Nigerian govt or individual ??

In barely a month's time, Nigeria-a country tagged as the giant of Africa would celebrate her 53 years of independence on the 1st of October, in my view I don't see the need for such celebration.
Why celebrate 'Independence' when there is still a high rate of poverty, unemployment and insecurity in the country ? Why celebrate independence when ASUU is on strike, and the supposed 'leaders of tomorrow' roast away at home ? Why celebrate independence when Nigeria ranks among the top ten countries in corruption and the number 1 country in cyber-crimes (yahoo-yahoo).....
I really cant see the need for such a celebration.

Could it  be that the Nigerian govt plans to celebrate this independence by distributing 53 gold plated I-phones ?
Earlier this week, Amjad Ali the founder of a dubai based company Gold and Co,  famous for gold-plating devices such as Ipads, Iphones, blackberrys on request by her rich customers claimed that the Nigerian government ordered for 53 gold-plated Iphones to mark the country's 53rd Independence, he was quoted as saying ''We will engrave them with the coat of arms, a shield and two horses'', during an interview with The independent.
The founder later reported yesterday in an interview with Simon Usborne that he made a mistake, that it was a Nigerian individual and not the Nigerian government that made the request for 53 gold I-phones...

No one knows the real truth, its possible Mr Amjad Ali retracted his statement because the former news didn't go down well with Nigerians and the Nigerian govt contacted him to retract his statement.
Whatever the truth is, whether it was an individual that placed the order or the Nigerian government, no one really knows, what we know for sure is Nigeria a country blessed with abundant natural and human resources is not where its supposed to be...

How to eat well and still loose weight

Sounds sensational doesn't it ? but its possible...
Hundreds of people most especially women around the world have been made to believe that being attractive has to do with how slim they are, thanks to the media (television, magazines, music, social media etc). It is better to be of the right weight, than to be under-weight or over-weight.

Whether men find slim or big women attractive is a topic for another day, as one man's meat is another's poison, just as one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter...
A'lot of women engage in harmful practices of forcing themselves to vomit their food, because they are trying to get into that 'ideal' size dictated by the media, little do they know that there are other ways to keep slim other than vomiting out their food or going on compulsory fast....
Yes! Its possible to eat well and still maintain that perfect size.
First, lets know what causes people to 'blow-up'.

What brings about fat ?
Genetics plays a big role in determining how we look-- facial feature, height, weight etc, that is probably why you would meet someone that eats very little but is still very fat... everyone also has that one friend that eats like a horse but looks like a broomstick, its all in the genes...

To be fair, not all cases of being over-weight can be blamed on genetics, (definitely not), most times, the real culprit is what we eat.
Food is of different classes-- proteins, carbonhydrates, fats and oil, vitamins, minerals etc, our body handles this classes of food differently, of the classes of foods listed, 'carbonhydrates' and 'fats and oil' are the leading causes of excessive weight.

Excess carbonhydrates and fats is stored up in the body muscles as fat, which means if you eat a'lot without getting the chance to burn it, you will keep storing up this fat in the body, and in no time, being slim would be a thing of the past!!!
Proteins cant be stored up as fat in the body, neither can minerals, vitamins or water...
Excess proteins would simply be discharged from the body. No matter how much of this classes of food that you eat, it wont be harmful to your weight, they would only make you fresher and healthier...

The need for exercise cant be over-emphasized, exercise refreshes the mind and the body, it leaves you feeling younger and helps burn the accumulated fat gotten from eating starchy foods (iyan, eba, akpo etc), The issue of exercise is often looked upon vaguely, what comes to mind when people see the word 'exercise' is a gym with all those scary looking equipments, exercise can be in any form-- walking briskly on the road, jogging, skipping, deciding to use the staircase instead of the lift... Just a simple 5 mins jog daily can do a great deal in shedding excess weight, whatever the type of exercise you choose, it should be done consistently and gradually so as not to lead to injury.

Tips on how to loose weight and remain fit
  • Pick a convenient exercise routine, it might be as easy as walking long distances briskly paced everyday, jogging, skipping or using the staircase, try to have fun while trying to loose weight, and having a partner that can motivate you also helps.
  • Avoid checking the scale everyday, so you dont get discouraged, weight cant be lost overnight.
  • Drink lots of water and eat lots of fruits and vegetables, this helps to satisfy your appetite (much better than starving!), you can never eat too much fruits, the more the better! Contrary to normal belief, fruits no matter how sweet cant be fattening.
  • Incorporate a'lot of protein into your diet and avoid starchy foods, sweet desserts, soft drinks etc.
  • Don't rely heavily on acclaimed 'slimming teas' and tablets, exercise and good eating habits are the real key to having a healthy weight, besides any size reduction gotten easily (by taking drugs) would be gained easily, and before you know it, you are addicted to slimming drugs.
  • Gradually incorporate more physical activities into your daily routine.
  • Avoid junk food and binge eating (eating randomly), eat at the right time.
More tips on how to maintain physical fitness would be posted soon, stay tuned, and re-share... You never can tell who might need to read this.

Eko Atlantic city set to transform Lagos state into a tourist haven

Lagos state is one of the largest growing cities in the world with a population of over 18 million people,it is the financial and commercial center of Nigeria.
Lagos is set to become the third largest city in the world by 2015. To cope with the ever growing population in the former federal capital territory, the Babatunde Raji Fashola administration in 2008 came up with the Eko Atlantic City plan.
The Eko Atlantic City is a planned district in the coastal city of Lagos State being constructed on land reclaimed from the Atlantic ocean, over 1000 square kilometers of the Atlantic ocean is to be reclaimed, the site of this proposed city is adjacent to the popular Victoria Island.
This project has faced a lot of opposition from different quarters especially in August 2011, when parts of Kuramo beach and the Victoria Island experienced a sea surge as a result of the construction activities going on in the area.
However, amidst all the opposition, the Eko Atlantic City was officially launched on the project site in Lagos state on the 21st of February 2013, President Goodluck Jonathan, Bill Clinton, Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola and former Governor of Lagos State Mr Bola Tinubu along with other dignitaries were present at the ceremony.

The contractor for the project is the China Communication Construction group, a global leader in the field of marine dredging and landfill operations. The city would be self sufficient, as it would have its own waste water treatment plant, power generating plant and effective transport system.
Once completed, it would be home to 400,000 residents with an estimated 250,000 commuters daily, according to the Mr David Frame Managing Director South Energyx Nigeria Limited, the land reclaimation is half way through and the first building should be completed by March 2015.

Apart from being a sight to behold, the Eko Atlantic City serves an environmental purpose, which is that of solving the erosion problem that currently disturbs residents of Victoria Island, it has a sea protection wall that would help prevent future ocean surges and storms, this 8km wall has been nicknamed
'The wall of Lagos'.
With all this mouth watering things said about the proposed city, there is no doubt that the prize tag that would be placed on apartments in the area would very expensive, far above what the average Nigerian can afford. It is however a welcome idea, in line with the vision of Governor Fashola to transform Lagos into a 21st Century City....
